Information for International Applicants to
KAIST NQe Graduate Program
Nuclear and quantum engineering is a multidisciplinary engineering field focused on developing nuclear and radiation technologies for clean energy production, medical diagnosis and therapy, and scientific and industrial applications. Since its establishment in 1980, the Department of Nuclear and Quantum Engineering at KAIST has played a leading role in these exciting developments. The Department has thus far produced over 1,300 graduates, and its doctoral graduates account for more than 50% of nuclear engineering PhDs granted in Korea.
The Department of Nuclear and Quantum Engineering at KAIST, one of the world’s leading academic units in the field, will strive to extend the frontiers of nuclear technology and to train responsible national and international leaders of the field through innovative and globalized education and research.

  • What is Dual (Double) Degree program?

    The Dual (Double) Degree Program allows students to earn two graduate-level qualifications—one
    from KAIST and one from an international partner institution—by completing a shared academic curriculum
    and fulfilling specific requirements established by both institutions. Participating students are enrolled at KAIST
    to undertake coursework and examinations, and to prepare a thesis in collaboration with both universities.
    The credits to be required at KAIST may vary depending on the agreement.
    Students are expected to defend their thesis at both institutions, culminating in two separate
    qualifications at the same academic level.

  • What is the KINS-KAIST program?

    The KINS-KAIST International Nuclear and Radiation Safety Master's Degree Program aims to educate and
    train overseas professionals in nuclear and radiation safety, with a focus on regulation.
    This program, a joint initiative by the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS) and
    the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), has been running since 2009.
    The International Nuclear Safety School (INSS) at KINS administers the program
    in collaboration with KAIST's Department of Nuclear and Quantum Engineering.
    The program lasts approximately one and a half years and awards a Certificate of Completion from KINS and
    an Engineering Master's Degree from KAIST upon fulfilling the requirements.

  • Q Difference in requirement between ITTP-GTIP
    A

    GDI’s ITTP schoalrship requires candidates from the public sector, however, GTIP is here for the private sector, especially from industry and research areas.   • Q I want to know more about department. Where can I get the information?
    A

    You can get department information including curriculum referring to below web pages. However, it is advisable to contact the department directly for updated information....

  • Q I attached my CV. Can you tell me whether I am eligible for KAIST?
    A

    It is very difficult to predict outcomes without reviewing the completed application. In particular we cannot make a full assessment just from seeing your CV or transcript, etc.

  • Q Do you admit transfer students?
    A

    No, we do not have the transfer program for international students. If you want to continue your study at KAIST, you have to apply as a freshman student. Instead, KAIST has student exchange programs with more than 200 countries, if you are interested, please visit this website.

  • Q Are courses in KAIST taught in Korean or in English?
    A

    Over 80 to 90% of lectures are offered in English.

  • Q I failed to get into KAIST this time, when are you sending back my documents?
    A

    Sorry, submitted documents will not be returned in any case.

  • Q My parents and I do not have a passport. What should I do?
    A

    You can submit a copy of national ID card instead of a passport.

  • Q I want to learn more about Korea and KAIST, is there any way?
  • Q What is the minimum score for the TOPIK or KLPT?
    A

    There are no minimums for the TOPIK or KLPT.
    TOPIK or KLPT is recommended, but not required.

  • Q I would like to apply for your MBA program. Do I have to present GMAT score?
    A

    GMAT is recommended, but not required.

  • Q When is your online application for prospective Master’s and Ph.D. program?
    A

    We select international graduate students twice a year through spring and fall admissions.
    The standard online application for the spring semester is in September and the fall semester is in April. We do not offer rolling admissions.

  • Q May I defer my admission?
    A

    Requests to defer admission will not be approved. You have to reapply and take an application process again.

  • Q Is there any scholarship available for international students?
    A

    Yes, we offer KAIST scholarship to international students. If you are selected as a KAIST scholarship recipient, you are generally exempt from paying tuition and fees. A monthly allowance of 300,000KRW and the national health insurance fee are supported by your advisor/department. But the scholarship amount and conditions are set prior to student’s enrollment based on the merits of the applicant. KAIST scholarship committee will examine exemption of tuition and fees every year.

  • Q How can I apply for KAIST scholarship and what is the scholarship eligibility?
    A

    Applicants with a financial need are able to apply for the scholarship. Select KAIST Scholarship as a means of your financial resources on the form of statement of financial resources in the online application. Scholarship recipients are announced along with final admissions notification.

  • Q What are tuition and fees and estimated associated costs of attending?
    A

    For the academic year of 2019, Graduate tuition is 12,600,000 KRW for Techno MBA, 15,910,000 KRW for Finance MBA, 4.048,000 KRW for other departments per semester. Graduate dormitory expenses differ from one building to another, but it is approximately over 90,000 KRW a month. Meals are available in on-campus cafeteria at a cost of 4,000~5,000 KRW.

  • Q Can my professor send a recommendation letter directly to KAIST?
    A

    From 2019 Fall Admission tracks, recommendation letters are only received by KAIST recommendation system. Once you complete application payment, each recommender will receive an automated email instructing them how to proceed with their recommendation letters through an online process. But please note that recommendation letters should be received to our system by the document submission due date.

  • Q Can my professor send a recommendation letter via email?
    A

    Sorry, we do not accept recommendation letters via email. Letters should be received through KAIST recommendation system.

  • Q I cannot get a recommendation letter from university professor because I graduated from the university long time ago.
    A

    You can get recommendation letters from supervisors, if you are employed.

  • Q How can I apply for Dual Degree program?
    A

    Dual Degree program is managed by respective departments. You can visit websites of each department clicking here.

  • Q Where can I apply to KAIST?
    A

    You can access International Graduate Apply Site and apply during the online application period only. Please read instructions carefully before you begin your application.

  • Q I can’t modify my online application. What should I do?
    A

    After paying the application fee, neither will you be allowed to modify your application form nor get the fee refunded.
    But in case the online application is not completed or needs to be modified after the payment, please send us email at
    advanced.adm@kaist.ac.kr then we will change your payment status from “paid” to “not paid” so that you can modify your application.

    When you finish modifying your application form, send us email again to change your status from “not paid” to “paid”.
    You can’t modify your application on “paid” status and please check your payment status at apply page. Do not pay the application fee twice.

  • Q Can I apply for two different departments at the same time if I pay application fee twice?
    A

    No, you have to apply for only one department or division or program.

  • Q I failed to upload my photograph on online application. Whenever I try, error message comes out.
    A

    In that case, please email us at advanced.adm@kaist.ac.kr or write contact form in Contact Us We will contact you after resolving the problem.

  • Q I have studied my undergraduate program in U.S.A.,
    am I exempt from submitting English Proficiency Test result?
    A

    Yes, if you completed your bachelor’s degree in English native speaking country (Guyana, New Zealand, United States, Ireland, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada), you are available to apply to KAIST without English Proficiency Test result.

  • Q My TOEFL score has just expired, can I submit this report?
    A

    No, English proficiency tests should be taken within two years prior to the online application deadline.
    If you submit the expired English test report, we consider it invalid.

  • Q I got 80 scores for TOEFL iBT, is it acceptable?
    A

    No, applicants must meet minimum score requirements:
    TOEFL iBT 83 (220 for computer-based; 560 for paper-based)
    IELTS 6.5
    TEPS 599
    TOEIC 720(Listening&Reading) or higher

  • Q Can I submit English proficiency test report after I accepted to KAIST?
    A

    No, you must submit EPT before the deadline of submission. Without EPT, your application will not be processed for review.

  • Q I have IELTS overall score of 6.5. But my writing score is 4.5. Is it acceptable?
    A

    We accept IELTS test report if overall band score is 6.5 or higher.

  • Q What is KAIST reporting code for TOEFL?
    A

    Institutional code is 0195. ETS reporting takes more than three weeks so you should prepare for this in advance.

  • Q I do not have an English proficiency test report but I can show the document that
    my English is excellent, will it be accepted?
    A

    No, English Proficiency Test Report is a mandatory requirement for all applicants. Applicants whose official/native language is not English must submit the EPT report. Applicants must meet one of the English proficiency test minimum score requirements: TOEFL iBT 83 (PBT 560, CBT 220), TOEIC 720, TEPS 599/New TEPS 326, IELTS (Academic mode) 6.5. Institutional Testing Program (ITP) is not valid.

  • Q Who can be exempt from submitting the EPT score?
    A

    * EPT Exemption requirement applies to three cases below.
    1. Applicants who are nationals of English native speaking countries (Guyana, New Zealand, United States, Ireland, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada) or officially English speaking countries (e.g. India, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Kenya, and etc.) are exempt from submitting the EPT report. An English Lecture Certificate is required for those who studied in officially English speaking countries.
    2. Applicants who completed their degree programs (Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral degree) in an English native speaking country are exempt from submitting an EPT report. (English native speaking countries: Guyana, New Zealand, United States, Ireland, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada)
    3. Applicants who are already enrolled in KAIST as graduate degree program (MS/PhD) student during the period of application are exempt from submitting the EPT report.

  • Q I paid application fee by credit card but it paid twice by mistake. Can I get a refund?
    A

    Please email us and inform us of your double payment then we will cancel one of the payments after checking your personal information.
