Introduction to Ethics & Safety Course

1.     Background

-       Academic circles at home and abroad have recently paid greater attention to research ethics, with the need for education on prevention of research misconducts being more highlighted than ever before.

-       KAIST seeks to prevent possible accidents in the laboratories by providing students with safety education and having them conform to safety regulations.

-       To this end, KAIST opens new online courses encompassing research ethics, safety management, sex education and leadership.

-       Graduate (CC020): ①Research Ethics/②Lab Safety/③Leadership

Note: In the case of graduate students, please refer to “7. Required Courses by Department” because each department has differing criteria on the sub-course of Lab Safety (i.e. some departments do not require their students to take the Lab Safety sub-courses).

4.     Exams, Grading, and Course Completion

 -       Grading: The grade “S” will be given to those passing the tests.

Note: Students need to score 80 or higher points from each of the sub-courses (i.e. “Research Ethics”, “Lab Safety”, “Sexual Violence & Sexual Harassment”, and “Leadership”) to pass them (i.e. get an “S”). The grades will be marked automatically on their report cards at the end of the semester.

-       Course completion

Undergraduate students need to pass the courses before graduation.

Graduate students presently studying at KAIST (freshmen included) should pass the courses in their first semester after their entrance in KAIST to graduate (※ Please take one time between master’s program and doctoral programs). However, if not taken in the first semester, grade “U” is not given but they must take the courses next semester.

5.     Matters to be attended by students

-       When you take the course of “Ethics and Safety”, you must take lectures and pass exams all of the sub-courses  within one semester. For example, if you had took 2 sub-courses (Research Ethics, Lab Safety) in Fall 2010 and took one (Leadership) in Spring 2011, it would't consider you to have completed this course.

You MUST finish taking all of the sub-courses and passing the tests within one semester.

6.     Requirements for degree conferral

-       Both undergraduate and graduate students should pass the courses before graduation (i.e. completion of these courses is mandatory for graduation).
