The paper “Redox behaviors of zirconium in molten LiCl-KCl eutectic salt based on the comproportionation reaction between Zr(0) and Zr(IV)” (Author: Han Lim Cha under the academic supervision of Prof. Jong-Il Yun), published in Electrochemistry Communications, 84 (2017) 86-89, was featured in Advances in Engineering, which is an online magazine for introducing the latest cutting-edge research articles.

In general, zirconium exhibits a very complex redox behavior in the LiCl-KCl eutectic salt. The interpretation of this is different from each other in research groups around the world, and there is a lack of accurate analysis and supporting evidence. However, based on the comproportionation reaction of Zr(IV) and Zr(0) and the cyclic voltammetry analyses with Zr working electrode, the authors identified the three major redox peaks (one reduction and two oxidations) in the cyclic voltammogram. The three redox peaks are more accurately assigned to the expected reaction compared to other literatures. The results of this study are expected to be useful for minimizing co-deposition of zirconium during electrorefining and for developing zirconium recovery process from spent nuclear fuel cladding.
