From radioactive waste to energy, Nuclear Startup CEO lecture (2018.3.27)

2018-04-02

Our department has held a speech about “Save the World with New Technology” at N7-1 DOOSAN lecture hall 4pm on March 27th. The speech was given by Dr. Leslie Dewan, who is a CEO at ‘Transatomic Power’, a start-up found by MIT doctors.

Dr. Dewan introduced us about a new nuclear reactor technology that make nuclear waste into useful energy resource. The new molten salt reactor that Dr. Dewan introduced can produce three times more energy with safer design.

Dr. Dewan is an engineer and entrepreneur who states that the future of human energy resource is nuclear energy and making nuclear energy that human wants.

She studied mechanical engineering in MIT as an undergraduate, and achieved doctor degree in nuclear engineering at MIT as a graduate student. After graduation, she was chosen as ‘Innovator Under’ 35 from MIT Technology Review, and ‘30 People Under 30 Changing the World’ from TIME magazine. She was also selected as the youngest person to be a MIT board of directors.

Dr. Dewan declares that she is an environmentalist. As an environmentalist, she started a nuclear energy start-up from the statistics that nuclear energy has the best ratio between energy produced and damage of human life compared to other energy resources humans use. Using nuclear waste to make energy will enable humans to make nuclear plants cheaper than other plants such as coal.

Our department agrees that the technology to safely and efficiently manage spent fuel is very important. We plan to actively cooperate with young leaders such as Dr. Dewan in the near future.
