The Lee Byong Whi Nuclear Energy Policy Center held an opening ceremony on July 15, 2011.
This center is a comprehensive nuclear policy center that not only deals with the technological aspects of nuclear energy, but also its political and industrial aspects such as nuclear diplomacy, security and exportation.
Moreover, it plans to propose a vision for nuclear energy and a direction for policy by examining the pending issues from a middle-to long-term perspective.
We expect the center to be the driving force behind the development of Korea's nuclear energy sector, and play a major role in expanding nuclear diplomacy and security collaboration and gaining a competitive edge in the nuclear energy exportation industry.
The center has been named the "Lee Byong Whi Nuclear Energy Policy Center" in memory of the late professor Lee Byong Whi of the KAIST Department of Nuclear and Quantum Engineering who was instrumental in the establishment of Korea's early nuclear energy policy. The center will be chaired by Dr. Yoon Il Chang of the US Argonne National Laboratory who is an authority on next-generation nuclear reactor research. He is also a visiting professor at KAIST.
Following the opening ceremony, a symposium was held under the title "the Direction of World Nuclear Energy Development after the Fukushima Accident." At this symposium, in-depth discussions were held on the direction of nuclear energy development for Korea, China, Japan and the US. They also exchanged opinions regarding the necessary measures for enhancing nuclear energy diplomatic collaboration among the nations of Korea, China and Japan.
