Received the “Wigner Reactor Physicist Award” of the American Nuclear Society

Nam Zin Cho, Professor Emeritus in Dept. of Nuclear and Quantum Engineering at KAIST, was chosen as a winner of the "Eugene P. Wigner Reactor Physicist Award" in 2017 from the American Nuclear Society.

Professor Eugene P. Wigner (in Princeton University) was a Nobel Prize laureate and a pioneer in the field of nuclear reactor physics as a substantial leader of the world's first nuclear reactor design projects with Dr. Enrico Fermi. In order to appreciate the works of Professor Wigner and to provide insight to the next generations, this award has been established as Professor Wigner himself being the first awardee in 1990 (passed away in 1995 at the age of 93).

After the prize is established in 1990, Prof. Nam Zin Cho of South Korea was the first winner of the prize from a country except the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy and Sweden. He was awarded due to his studies, the superiority of analytic function expansion nodal method, 2D/1D fusion neutron transport calculation method, and partial neutron current coarse mesh finite difference acceleration method, and other significant contributions in the field of reactor physics. The award ceremony including commemorative lecture took place at the annual conference of the American Nuclear Society in Washington, DC, in November.

Prof. Nam Zin Cho was appointed as a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society in 2001 due to his contribution to the reactor core design methodology and computational analysis technology in reactor physics, core areas of nuclear engineering.
