Our department hosted 'The 3rd Annual KAIST NQE Distinguished Lecture Series' by inviting Dr. William W. Moses, Senior Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley Lab and University of California-Berkeley, USA, on October 11, 2016 at KAIST Creative Learning building.


The lecture was attended by more than 100 experts in the field of nuclear and quantum engineering, including professors and students of our department, and researchers who visited from other institutes.


Dr. William W. Moses's lecture, which started with opening remarks of Professor Sung-Min Choi who is the head of our department and Professor Seung-Ryong Cho's introduction, was on the subject of 'Positron Emission Tomography Instrumentation: Present Status and Future Directions'.


In this lecture, Dr. Moses introduced 'the imaging principle of PET, physics, engineering advancement, and clinical relevance' and explained the great influence of PET, one of the functional imaging modalities, on modern medicine.


In addition, he introduced a recently launched project named “The world’s first whole body PET scanning system,” and he explained the major difference between the existing PET in terms of technological elements. He finished the one-hour long lecture by mentioning that while the CT and the MRI were awarded the Nobel Prize in medical imaging technology, PET did not yet lead to the Nobel Prize, which implying the future possibilities of PET that lie ahead.

 After the lecture, he had about 30 minutes of Q & A. After all the schedule was over, Prof. Sung-Min Choi gave a gift to Dr. William. Agar, a student at KAIST Department of Nuclear and Quantum engineering, said, "I was impressed with the development of the medical imaging modality in the United States by some of the best labs in the world," he said.
